Structural Expansion for the Ground-State Energy of Simple Metals. I

For simple metals, the perturbational expansion of the structure-dependent ground-state energy is critically studied, in the Hartree-Fock approximation. In contradistinction to the existing approach based on a simple use of the shielded electron-ion interaction, the importance of the vertex function is pointed out in comparison with the role of corrections to the dielectric function, particularly in the fourth-order term. With a main interest in the region of the shortest reciprocal lattice vector smaller than the Fermi diameter, the validity of the expansion is examined in detail by figuring out the relevant one-electron terms.
