Inelastic scattering of negative pions on C^<12> is investigated in the distorted wave impulse approximation. Cross sections are calculated for excitation of 2^+(4.43 MeV), 3^-(9.64 MeV) and of complex levels around 15 MeV by pions with energies from 120 to 280 MeV, and are compared with experiments.
