The absorption of π mesons is considered to occur on a correlated nucleon pair in the nucleus (N). The proton-neutron pair absorbs a π meson leaving the residual nucleus (N-2) behind. This process gives information about the momentum distribution of the center of mass of the proton-neutron pair with respect to that of other nucleons of the nucleus. The information about the momentum distribution is also studied by the (p, pd) reaction. The similarity of the expression of the absorption of the stopped π^- meson by C^<12> to that of the C^<12>(p, pd) reaction is shown when the residual nucleus B^<10> is left in low-lying states. It is also shown that a knocked-out deuteron at the zero momentum transfer in the C^<12>(p, pd) reaction and two neutrons emitted at the angle of 180° to each other in the C^<12>(π^-, 2n) reaction are hardly observed when the residual nucleus B^<10> is left in the ground and first excited states.
