On the Problem of Gravitational Collapse

A new approach to the problem of gravitational collapse is proposed, which is reasonable from the standpoint of fitting conditions at the boundary of a collapsing star, contrary to Oppenheimer-Snyder's original approach. The fitting is carried out on the basis of O'Brien-Synge's boundary conditions by using the system of co-moving coordinates even in the exterior region. Then we can show that Hoyle-Narlikar's procedure of fitting relying on the system of non-co-moving coordinates is, after a suitable reinterpretation, justified on the basis of our approach. However, our approach is superior to Hoyle-Narlikar's in the sense that our exterior solution extended maximally is free from Schwarzschild's singularity, so that we can reasonably deal with the problem of hidden mass in stellar systems, because the singularity corresponds to a light cone in the space-time defined by our new metric. A new formula for the spectral shift applicable to the collapsing star is also derived, and its possible role in the explanation of large red-shift of star-like objects is referred to.
