Formal Theory of Nonlinear Response to Pulse Fields : The Perturbative Approach

A perturbative approach is developed in order to analyse nonlinear response to pulse fields. Using the generalized Kubo's theory and his abbreviated notation, we show what kinds of processes are elementary and important in the higher-field case. The operator associated with the square pulse field is introduced to clarify its physical meaning. Under a certain approximation it turns out that the time dependence of the nonlinear response is always determined just by that of the lowest order response or the elementary response. Saturation and echo phenomena and rotation of polarization of the system are also discussed.
