The muscle fibers were taken out from seven different places in the diaphragm of an adult male cat and these muscle fibers were cut into 10-15μ thick refrigerated cross section, stained by Sudan Black B solution and included in 5% glycerin gelatin. We have measured on these specimens the number and the diameter of muscle fibers by an ocular micrometer under a microscope of 100-400 magnifications and made histograms with 1μ-unit intervals. The results obtained were as follows : 1. At first, we classified muscle fibers into four types (r., r.m., w.m. and w.). But it was revealed by studying the stain conditions and the diameter of muscle fibers that the classification into two types (red muscle fibers and white muscle fibers) is more reasonable. Red muscle fibers correspond to the ones which has been called as slow, narrow or smaller muscle fibers, and white muscle fibers to the fast, broad or larger ones. 2. The diameters of muscle fibers range from 10 to 180/<; 10 to 110μ for the red muscle fibers and from 10 to 180μ for the white muscle fibers. It shows that the diameters of the white muscle fibers have wider range of distribution and are ordinarily larger in magnitade than the red one. 3. The number ratio of red and white muscle fibers is 36.9% and 63.1% respectively, which corresponds to the ratio of 1 ; 1.71. The white muscle fibers exceed considerably in number the red ones. To say more precisely, (see Fig. 1), these number ratios of the red muscle fibers to white ones at the two places near the aorla diminish to 1 : 1.97 and 1 : 1.86. In Hie sternal parts, also the same tendency is observed and the ratio are 1 : 1.81 and 1 : 1.82. On the contrary, in the costal parts the ratios increase to 1 : 1.45 and 1 : 1.16. 4. The average diameters of muscle fibers are as follows : 47.6μ for r., 47.1μ for r.m., 48.3μ for w.m. and 64.6μ for w. According to the classification of two kinds, the average diameter of red muscle fibers is 47.1μ, and 56.5μ for the white one. More in detail, in the parts near the aorta and in the costal parts, the average diameters are 53.9 udand 56.9μ respectively, which are larger than the average diameter of 47.5μ in the sternal parts It seems to be a tendency that in the sternal parts as well as in the costal parts, the diameters of muscle fibers are larger in the periphery than the ones near the npnter of thp dianhracrm.
