After a vital fixation of a man by infusing an Orth's solution through the aorta, anterior and posterior roots of the 1st cervical nerve and the 2nd thoracic nerve were taken out. These nerves, fixed with an Orth's solution again and then with Miiller's solution, were cut into about 10μ thick refrigerated cross section and were included in 5% glycerin-gelatin solution. Thus the authors have measured the size of all myelinated fibers by an ocular micrometer under a microscope of 1,000 magnifications and made histograms to be analyzed. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The diameter of myelinated fibers composing the groups of the anterior roots ranges from 1 to 18μ, and that of the posterior roots has also the same ranges. 2. The histograms show that the myelinated fibers of the anterior root in the 1st cervical nerve always consist of two groups of middle fibers (6 to 8μ) and of large fibers (11 to 13μ) and those in the 2nd thoracic nerve always consist of three groupe of small fibers (4 to 5μ), middle fibers (7 to 8μ) and large fibers (12 to 13μ), the middle fibers being assumed to cause tonic contraction of a muscle and the large fibers to cause phasic contraction. And the small fibers are assumed to be the fibers of sympathetic nerve. 3. The myelinated fibers of the posterior root in the 1st cervical nerve consist of two groups of small fibers (3 to 4μ) and of large fibers (9 to 10μ) and those in the 2nd thoracic nerve consist of two groups of small fibers (3 to 4μ) and of large fibers (8 to 9μ), and the small fibers are assumed to feel protopathic sense and the large fibers to feel epicritic sense. 4. The numbers of the small fibers and the large fibers of the anterior root in the 1st cervical nerve occur in the numerical ratio of about 7 : 3, and those of the anterior root in the 2nd thoratic nerve occur in the numerical ratio of about 5 : 1 : 4. And both of posterior roots occur in the numerical ratio of 6 : 4. 5. The diameter ratio (g) of axis cylinder (a) to medullated nerve fiber (d), (a/d×100=g) is 50〜60% in the small fibers in any anterior and posterior roots, and becomes large as the size of nerve fiber increases; in other words, the relative thickness of myelin sheath is thicker in small-sized fibers and becomes thinner with the widening of the fiber diameter. And a line given by the expression y = 1.39x + 55.62 (anterior root in the 1st cervical nerve), y = 1.06x + 54.49 (anterior root in the 2nd thoracic nerve), y = 1.55 x + 54.99 (posterior root in the 1st cervical nerve), y = 0.78 x + 52.85 (posterior root in the 2nd thoracic nerve). Furthermore, the slopes of the line of the anterior and posterior root in the 1st cervical nerve are not distinct, but in the 2nd thoracic nerve the difference of the slopes are recognized in some degree.
