Almost all today's industrial workplaces divide work and separate people. The workers need less skill than they who performed all the tasks of the more complex work. The de-skilled process is accelerated more and more with the widespread application of electronic data processing. It cannot make no exception of the personnel who tell computers what to do. Programmers are not the same as assembly line workers, and are still in a position to control of their final product. But structured programming and modularization made possible a job-based division of labor in programming. CASE (computer-aided software engineering) tools allowed personnel to spend less time on routine task , and made it possible for relatively young and inexperienced personnel. In this study, I'll ask who are programmers, what they know, what and how they do, and under what conditions they do it. My strategy for answering these questions is to examine programmers at japan's software firms. The data for the study were obtained from our survey-sample containing 964 cases.
