Development of many tissues is achieved by several chemically regulated processes that induce proliferation, differentiation and programmed cell death. The programmed cell death is processed by apoptosis. The cellular localization and roles of Fas, Fas ligand, and apoptosis-relating factors in human orofacial development remained unclear. Thus, Fas-Fas ligand cell death system, apoptotic cell detected by in sittu 3'-end labeling method (TUNEL), Bcl-2, and Bax were immunohistochemically examined in the head of human fetuses of 11-week pregunancy. Fas and Bcl-2 were positive inosteocytes, and Fas ligand was apparently positive in osteoblasts, the stroma of periosteum, and dental sac of tooth germ. Osteoblasts were also positive of Bax. In conclusion, it is probably thought that the development of jaw bone and teeth was closely associated in Fas-based apoptosis with regtulatioun by Bcl-2 and Bax at downstream.
