Two major sex pheromone components, (E,Z)- and (E,E)-10-,12-hexadecadienals were identified from the pheromone gland extracts of the cotton leaf-roller, Notarcha derogata (FABRICIUS) on the Chinese bottle tree, Steruculia simplex. They were essential to attract males in laboratory and field bioassays. A binary blend of the two aldehydes in ratio of 3: 1 was the best blend tested. Each of the geometrical isomers was not active individually. As possible minor components, hexadecanal, (E,Z)- and (E,E)-10, 12-hexadecadienol were also found in the crude extract.
