An Experimental Study of the Diurnal Activity and Behavior in Relation to CO_2,of the Larvae of Ticks, Haemaphysalis longicornis

A measurement apparatus for recording the activity of the larvae of ticks, Haemaphysalis longicornis, was newly developed. The activity of the larvae of ticks under conditions of 20℃ in the dark, 20℃ in the light, 26℃ in the dark and 26℃ in the light, was recorded over 2-3 days using the apparatus. Light intensity was 800-1000 Lux by fluorescent light.It was found that there were two peaks, the hours from 9 : 00 to 12 : 00 a.m. and from 5 : 00 to 12 : 00 p.m., in the diurnal activity of the tick larvae which ascend or descend. On the basis of these data relating to the diurnal activity of the tick larvae, experiments were conducted on the behavior in relation to CO_2 under conditions of 26℃ in the dark and of 26℃ in the light, 800-1000 Lux. These data have made clear that they are active in response to CO_2,and that when CO_2 is given for 5 minutes in the experimental box, they are active, and begin to ascend or descend on the inside glass walls, and that as time passes their activity becomes gradually lower, and they return to their pattern of diurnal activity.
