It is well known that Wordsworth revised his works repeatedly throughout his literary life. Thus many of his important poems have plural versions. This plurality of his texts has given rise to a controversy over which is the best of these versions, a controversy peculiar to Wordsworth studies.　By Wordsworth's Guide we usually refer to A Guide through the District of the Lakes in the North of England published in 1835. But this is the fifth and final version. He published the first in 1810, and the third in 1822. And we may see some significant differences among these versions. However scholars, even though they have been keenly interested in Wordsworth's alterations in such works as The Prelude, have paid little attention to the revisions of his Guide. It is the aim of this paper to fi1l a part of this blank in the study of Wordsworth.　What Wordsworth wants to tell in each version of the Guide may be surnmed up into the fo11owing two: (1)the essential components of the scenery of the Lakes, and (2)the informafion for traveling. In this paper I have examined how these two subjects are related in the first, third, and last versions, and found that in the first version Wordsworth thinks it most important to teach the readers what they should expect from the scenery of the Lakes by explaining (1). And when he gives (2), his account is closely related to his views of (1). However, as the Guide went through the impressions, he came to put more emphasis on (2). And in the final version, the two subjects are so disconnected that most travelers would not feel inclined to read the pages dealing with (1). As the final version contains this incongruity of the two subjects, it is not so good a text as it has been considered.
