Some of the Old English (OE) prepositions govern both the accusative case and the dative case. Concerning the selection of the grammatical case, it is generally stated that they govern the accusative when 'destination' or 'motion' is implied, and that they govern the dative when 'position' or 'rest' is implied. But, in reality, this distinction is not always observed. OE on is not 'only one of the prepositions used most frequently but also one of the typical examples of this type of prepositions. Following the serial investigations which revealed that there is a close relationship between the selection of the accusative and the implication of 'destination,' the present paper makes it clear that there is a strong correspondence between the selection of the dative and the implication of 'position' in the phrases introduced by OE on.
