We have isolated a series of bacteriophages lytic on Escherichia coli O-157 in Japan during the years of 1996-97. About 1,000 samples in nature are collected and lytic phages on O-157 which form clear plaque are isolates and characterized. It was found a variety of different phage phenotype on different E.coli O-157 in respect to plaque morphology, burst size and their DNA restriction pattern. DNA sequencing results indicated that these phages possesed new genome(no homology with other known phages)and classified in to several groups. Their biological roles in animal (including human)are discussed. Two line of experiments using these lytic phages demonstrated its usefulness in removing pathogenic E.coli in vitro and in vivo.
