The goal of our research is to take up adverbs which express degrees of smallness in Japanese and Chinese, and carry out this examination from the point of view of contrasting research of Chinese and Japanese, clarifying the meaning of the degree adverbs in both languages and the usage, and modification corresponding relationship. On the assumption that there are close parallels in both languages, I classified the Chinese 「稍微」「稍稍」「多少」「有点儿」 and the Japanese 「少し」「少々」「多少」「ちょっと」. 1. The result of examining the classification of Chinese and Japanese degree adverbs and the characteristics of their structure, the adverb 「多少」 found in both languages express together with a small degree of uncertainly, a small amount and the Chinese 「稍微」 and the Japanese 「少し」「ちょっと」「少々」 and although it is clear that the similarities of each express a small amount and a small degree, the Chinese relative adverbs of degree's 「稍微」,「多少」 and so on in many cases such as 「(一)点儿/(一)些」 must be accompanied by co-current expressions and superimposing verbs. But we can also see points of difference exclusive in the usage of the Japanese 「多少」「少し」「ちょっと」「少々」. 2. Because the Chinese absolute degree adverb 「有点儿」 often occurs with qualifying adjectives depending on the sentence structure, it can be seen that there is an easy cooccurrence of the thin qualifying adjective of evaluation, but when co-current with evaluative statements so that we cannot take the balance of large positive evaluations and the smallness of degree found in 「有点」 we consider the limit of cooccurrence which requires a negative evaluation. On the other hand examining both 「少し」 and「多少」 found in the measured sentences, in the case of cooccurrence with objective genetive phrases and subjective evaluative words and in the case of objective genetive words, in contrast to a limit of cooccurrence not occuring much in subjective evaluations we have obtained the result that negative evaluations are more likely to occur. At the same time the adverb of degree 「ちょっと」, so that it subsists in a modal element which expresses attitudes of judgement and communication, with a predicate of degree, the conclusion that there is no cooccurrence restriction has appeared.
