In English, in contrast to Japanese, there are many kinds of expressions in the form of nouns or noun equivalents. This is mainly because in English, more stress is placed on nominal constructions, while in Japanese the stress is on verbs. This means that special attention should be paid to the role of nouns in English. To illustrate the special functions of nouns and noun equivalents in English, this paper will show how some English nominal constructions are used to indicate stative expressions. The habit of using a separate word to express each separate element in a complex notion is one that can be traced throughout the historical development of English as an analytic language. We see it in the greatly in creased use of nouns and prepositions, by means of which it seems possible to express almost every shade of thought which was formerly rendered by verbs and adjectives. When expressions are rendered by means of nouns rather than by verbs, they often become more abstract, precise, adequate, and persuasive. Such means of expression allow a more subtle analysis of thought and a more delicate expression of every shade of meaning.
