I Introduction In this article I want to show that through the critical consideration of In Search of Excellence the excellence of companies is better explained by our theory of business management as a whole than by American theory of management function. Our theory intends to unify the American theory of management function and German theory of managerial economics (Betriebswirtschaftslehre). American theory is mainly to see the subjective side of the business management as a whole (the management existence). Contrary to it German theory is mainly to see its objective side. To understand the reality of management as a whole, the subjective side (management function) is to be unified with the objective side (managerial economics) and vice versa. II Eight attributes and new theory From our standpoint of the science of business management as a whole, In Search of Excelence by Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman Jr. is a very interesting book in the following two points. First, as its subtitle Lessons from America's Best-Run Companies shows, they induce eight attributes of excellent companies from results of their earnest excellent company survey in USA. They are : (1) A bias for action. (2) Close to the customer, (3) Autonomy and entrepreneurship, (4) Productivity through people, (5) Hands-on, value-driven, (6) Stick to the knitting, (7) Simple form, lean staff, (8) Simultaneous loose-tight properties. If these eight attributes are sufficient as characteristics of excellent companies, there is a question, but each of them must be important as an expression of the attitudes and abilities of management leaders. Second, above mentioned eight attributes can't be explained, they think, by the rational model of the traditional theory of management in USA. To understand the relationship between the performance of the excellent companies and the eight attributes, they intend to provide some new theory of management. But what is the new theory of management? III Critique Thus, seeking the new theory of management, they criticize the rational model of the traditional American management since Taylor. 0n this critique, they find the new theory in human problems of organizations and intend to manage ambiguity and paradox in the actual world of management. Their research of the new theory attains at last from Barnardian theory of organization to Weik's social evolution theory and finishes there. How do we estimate this new theory? Indeed is this the new theory? No, it isn't. Their new theory isn't new, but an old, traditional management function especially management leadeship theory. Their eight attributes are characteristics of management leaders. Excellence of companies can't be judged from only the subjective side (management function) of the business management as a whole. It must be judged from the unity of subjective-objective sides namely from the business management as a whole. In the following we wish to try to examine critically their eight attributes of excellent companies from our this standpoint and explain the meaning of excellence of companies as clear as possible.
