CATV is an abbreviated term of Community Antenna or Cable TeleVision. This system was introduced in the U. S. in 1948,but its full-scale spread was brought about in the 1970's through distribution of source programs via communication satellite. In Japan, CATVs are categorized into 3 types. One of them is the authorized facility, in which the urban CATV is included. This has three criteria : terminals of more than 10,000,original program channels of m re than 5,and two-way system. Most of urban CATVs began to operate after 1990. The author interviewed 10 subscribers of an urban CA V in Tokyo. They became acquainted with it through information acquisition from their children and subscribed mainly through their neighborhood association. They positively evaluated the CATV system. Their increasing contact with it, however, made them give answers of "few programs worthy of watching" or "lack of an enough time to watch". Urban CATVs would play a leading role in penetration of other CATV systems, if they could provide attractive programs different from the existing landline broadcast and create new services to make the best of their two-way system.
