A new method for the measurement of activities has been developed, where the ratio of two linear combinations of component pressures is determined as a function of the composition of the solution. The method is applied to the benzene (C_6H_6)-toluene (C_6H_5CH_3) system at 288.8 K. The height of a peak in a second-derivative absorption spectrum of a gas mixture can be a linear combination for absorbent concentrations in the absorption cell in the case that absorbents have their own absorption maxima at the same wave length. If such coincidence of absorption maxima occurs at two wave lengths 1 and 2,the ratio of respective peak height h_1 and h_2 has following features : 1) The ratio depends slightly upon the concentration ratio of the absorbents. 2) The ratio can be converted to a quantity proportional to the concentration ratio. 3) The ratio is almost insensitive to the variation of intrumental factors. In the present study, the vapor equilibrated with the benzene-toluene solution is introduced into the spectrophotometer after adequate dilution with inert gas (N_2). The height ratio of absorption peaks at two wave lengths in the ultraviolet range is determined as a function of the composition of the solution and then analyzed with the aid of the Gibbs-Duhem relationship to derive the activity-composition curves. The present method may be applicable to other spectroscopic measurements.
