An experimental study on the effects of temperature on the sediment volumes and settling rates at a temperature range from 20 to 80℃ was carried out, using concentrated aqueous suspensions of kaolin and ferric oxide. The experimental results are summerized as follows : (1) The sediment volume in dispersed systems is found to be independent of temperature, while in flocculated systems, it is increased slightly with the increase of temperature. The critical concentration of KCl required for flocculation of kaolin is found almost independent of temperature. (2) In flocculated systems with a lower solid concentration, straightline relationships are obtained at an early stage of the settling curves. Settling rates in such area are affected by the factors of solid concentration, ionic strength, and temperature. (3) It was confirmed that the cluster model for flocculated kaolin suspension at 25℃ is valid at higher temperatures, and found to be applicable not only to kaolin, but to ferric oxide. (4) The physical properties of aggregates derived from the cluster model are discussed in connection with the properties of primary particles of the minerals.
