The possibility of fixing chromium with an iron oxide-lime-silica melt has been investigated at various oxygen potentials by the method of heating and quenching followed by leaching in water. The results are summarized as follows : (1) Chromium was fixed by an FeO-Cr_2O_3-SiO_2 melt coexisting with metallic iron at 1300℃. Replacing FeO with Fe_2O_3 in the starting sample load did not affect the fixing behaviour.(2) In the presence of metallic iron, one homogeneous liquid region in the FeO-Cr_2O_3-SiO_2-20%CaO system was determined at 1300℃ as shown in Fig.3. In addition, the existence of a second liquid zone was detected near the FeO apex. Chromium was fixed in all the areas studied, but the pH value in the leached solution increased in the region of high FeO.(3) The melting behavior of various FeO (or Fe_2O_3)-CaO-Cr_2O_3-SiO_2 compositions under a 1.8%O_2-98.2% N_2 gas mixture or air was studied at 1300℃. The highest solubility of Cr (10%Cr_2O_3) was obtained when the FeO-CaO-Cr_2O_3-SiO_2 mixture was heated in an air atmosphere. This value was decreased to a few % when the FeO was replaced by Fe_2O_3. In all cases, chronaium could be fixed in the melt.(4) Heating experiments at temperatures from 600 to 1300℃ were carried out using air, a 1.8%O_2-89.2% N_2 gas mixture or CO_2. Most of the products were powder. The amounts of chromium dissolved in water increased with (a) decreasing temperature, (b) increasing lime content and (c) increasing oxygen pressure. The results suggest that the utilization of iron oxide-lime-silica melts to fix the chromium in solid waste materials should be further developed.
