Omiya mine is the largest copper and iron pyrite producer in the southern Aizu district, Fukushima Prefecture. The region is mainly composed of Tertiary green tuff, liparite, dacite and dykes of andesite, dolerite, basalt and perlite. The deposit is epithermal replacement one, so-called "Black Ore" type, formed by the mineralizatien attended by the liparite volcanic action extruded through green tuff. Minerals of ore are mainly pyrite, chalcopyrite, barite and quartz accompanied with small amounts of zincblende, galena, hematite and gypsum. The chemical composition of the ore and volume and weight percentages of constituent minerals computed from analytical values are mentioned in Tables 1 and 2. In the deposit large quantity of red mud, usually not seen in mines, is associated. This clayey substance was identified through chemical analysis and X-ray investigation to be the aggregate of minute particles of hematite. The results of the determination of particle sizes by Andreasen pipette method are shown in Fig.1 and Table 4. The ore was crushed by small gyratory crusher and sized grains were observed under a reflecting microscope to determine the degree of liberation. The results are shown in Fig. 2 and Table 6. The ore is easier to liberate monomineral grains than usual complex sulphide ores of "Black Ore" type.
