The titaniferous iron placers from Misawa, Sabishiro, Shinchi, Takachiho, Odaka, and Fukura were used as samples. Artificial and natural magnetites, ilmenite, specular hematite, and quartz were used as standard samples. The chemical analyses of the ores were 23-35% Fe (total), 13-23% FeO, and 5-20% TiO_2. The ratios of TiO_2/Fe (total) varied considerably, being 0.22-0.60. The sizes of the ores were relatively uniform. The 65-200 mesh fractions occupied 72-98% in weight and the fractions finer than 200 mesh were very scarce, being less than 3%. The maximum size was about 14 mesh. The ores tested were grouped into two kinds, according to the concentration of TiO_2 in magnetic concentrates. In the ores from Misawa, Sabishiro, and Fukura, TiO_2 concentrated in concentrates, whereas, in the ores from Shinchi, Takachiho, and Odaka, TiO_2 concentrated in tailings. The characteristics of the former group were the larger quantity of concentrates. The distinction between two kinds of ores was easily made by determining the specific gravity and magnetic permeability of sized fractions of ores. The amount of magnetic fraction hitherto utilized as an index expressing the characteristics of iron placers was unsatisfactory. The analyses of magnetic concentrates were 52-58 % Fe (total) and 26-31 % FeO, but the ratios of TiO_2/Fe (total) were 0.11-0.32. It was inferred that the greater part of TiO_2 in magnetic concentrates was in the form of solid solution with magnetite and a smaller part in the form of Fe_2O_3-ilmenite. The degrees of oxidation of magnetic concentrates calculated by Sasaki and Adachi's formula were almost constant, being 85-88%. There was a fairly good correlation between Fe (total)-content and the apparent initial permeability of the products from magnetic separation, but no correlation between TiO_2-content and the latter. The TiO_2-content in magnetic tailings might be concentrated to considerably higher grades by removing gangue minerals in some way or other, especially, those from Odaka, Shinchi, and Takachiho might be concentrated with higher recoveries as well. The Schuhmann's size distribution law was not applicable to ores and ground products except those from Sabishiro. By introducing the graphical method of solution by substitution of size distribution data, the apparent grindability numbers (resistance to grinding) of ores were obtained, being 30-150 min under the specified conditions of grinding tests. The ores were listed in order of increasing grindability number as follows : Misawa, Sabishiro, Fukura, Shinchi, Takachiho, and Odaka. The apparent grindability numbers and FeO-contents of ores were closely interrelated.
