With a view to making contributions to the fundamental study of the reclamation of media in dense-media separation, the relation between the sedimentation of suspended particles and the stability of suspensions was considered, and the effect of electrolytes, such as NaCl, BaCl_2,Na_2CO_3,Na_3PO_4・12H_2O, Na_4P_2O_7・10H_2O, and NaOH, on the sedimentation of fine particles of pyrite cinder, minus 325-mesh in size, in dilute suspensions under the conditions corresponding to those during the constant settling period in thickening was investigated in an automatic sedimentation balance. The results obtained were as follows : (1) The stability of suspensions was defined as the total sum of the potential energies of suspensions in every instant. (2) The equations expressing the relation between the settling time and the quantity of particles in suspension and that between the settling time and the potential energy of particles in suspension were theoretically derived. (3) To compare the stabilities of two suspensions, the relative stability, defined by the ratio of two values of time integral of the quantity of particles in suspension in every instant, was proposed. (4) It was suggested that the stabilities of various suspensions would be compared by those of ideal suspensions of homogeneous particles, Reynolds numbers of which would be used as the criteria with advantage. It was, however, pointed out that the difference in densities of medium solid and medium liquid should be considered. (5) It was observed that the sedimentation curve was somewhat changed with the variation of concentration of suspensions. Hence the stability should be compared for two suspensions at the same concentration. (6) The fine particles of pyrite cinder were observed to be fairy flocculated in pure water even in extremely dilute concentrations. (7) The effect of electrolytes on the behaviour of particles coarser than colloidal particles was very similar to that of colloidal particles. (8) BaCl_2 or Na_4P_2O_7・10H_2O was a good dispersing agent for the fine particles of pyrite cinder, and Na_3PO_4・12H_2O was a good flocculating agent. But Na_4P_2O_7・10H_2O acted as a flocculating agent at lower concentrations.
