The use of gas bearings is spreading in various fields of modern industry. Gas bearings have often special merits when used in machine parts where the temperature is very high or low, where the frictional torque must be exceptionally low, where contamination by ordinary oily lubricants is highly objectionable, and where the shaft must be run at very high speed, etc. In recent years many papers have appeared in the theoretical field of gas bearings, and, on the contrary, not so many in the experimental field, maybe owing to experimental difficulties and complexities of the results; we can find hardly any comprehensive experimental work concerning the performances of a gas-lubricated journal bearing. We have here designed and manufactured a test rig with the aid of the Central Research Laboratory of the Tokyo-Shibaura Electric Co. for studying the general performance of a gas-lubricated journal bearing, which has the principal dimension of 50 mmφ× 100mm and can be run up to 20,000rpm. By the use of this rig, we can measure the frictional torque, pressure distribution in the gas film, and the static and dynamic changes of eccentricity, both in hydrodynamically and hydrostatically lubricated conditions. In this paper the details of the rig and some of the problems encountered during the preliminary test are described.
