The purpose of this study was to investigate what factors are related to the mortality rate of cerebrovascular diseases. The analyses of correlation and stepwise multiple regression were performed by using the several social indicators of natural environment, population, households and families, economic, finance, labour, housing and living conditions, medical services, medical supplies, health projects and other social welfare services among all the forty seven prefectures in Japan. Positive correlations were found between the mortality rate of cerebrovascular diseases and population ratio of 65 years old and over, ratio of aging households, ratio of owned houses, mortality rate of malignant neoplasms and cardiovascular diseases, participation rate of health consultation and nurses per 100,000 persons (p<0.01). On the other hand, negative correlations were found between the mortality rate of cerebrovascular diseases and yearly average of air temperature, population density, ratio of family nuclei households, ratio of persons employed in the tertiary industries, general hospitals and clinics in 100km^2 of inhabitable area (p<0.01). Stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that population ratio of 65 years old and over, yearly average of air temperature and per capita medical care expenditure of inpatients contributed to the mortality rate of cerebrovascular diseases (p<0.01). The findings of this study suggest that aging social indicators and natural environmental ones have a great influence on the mortality rate of cerebrovascular diseases.
