Wavelength Control of PZT-driven Fiber Grating External Cavity Laser Diode

We have fabricated a fiber grating external cavity laser diode (FG-LD) emitting at 1.55 um composed of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a Fabry-Perot laser diode and studied the emitting wavelength control. The fabricated FG-LD was equipped with two PZT actuators to induce tensile strain into the FBG. The emitting wavelength of the FG-LD was monitored through a C_2H_2 gas cell. For pre-tuning of the emitting wavelength, the FBG was pulled by the PZT actuators to make the Bragg wavelength nearer to the C_2H_2 absorption line. Then fine tuning of the wavelength was achieved by adjustment of LD injection current. By combination of these tunings, it was shown that the precise control of the emitting wavelength of FG-LD could be accomplished.
