Design and Fabrication of Semiconductor Photodetectors Integrated with Polyimide Optical Waveguide for FTTH

A surface-incidence-type photodiode combined with a polyimide waveguide was designed in order to realize a low-cost photodetector integrated with a planar lightwave circuit (PLC) for fiber to the home (FTTH) application. As a first step, a photodiode without the polyimide waveguide was fabricated and its basic characteristics were measured. It was confirmed that the fabricated photodiode had enough performance for a 10 Gb/s-optical interconnection and 1 Gb/s-optical access network systems.
