Bragg Wavelength Tuning of Fiber Grating with Joule-Heating and Tensile Strain

A fiber grating is an optical device which can reflect light having a very narrow band wavelength. The reflection wavelength is changed by applying heat and stress to the grating region. We obtained the wavelength shift of 1.54nm by Joule-heating with an electrical resistor and that of 5.76nm by tension using a micro step stage with a stepper motor. Using these methods, we studied the possibility for an optical wavelength switch and a wavelength selector. As for optical switching, we obtained 15dB and 14dB optical extinction ratios for the reflected and transmitted light, respectively, with the Joule-heating method; 15dB and 21dB with the pulling method. Further, for the wavelength selecting experiment using two wavelengths, the maximum crosstalk of 10dB was obtained with the pulling-method.
