Coupling Characteristics of Spot-Size Converted Laser Diode to Polymeric Optical Waveguide with 45°Mirror for Optical Surface Mount Technology

Low loss optical waveguides having a 45°mirror are key to Optical Surface Mount Technology (O-SMT) which was proposed to provide a possible solution to increasingly serious problems in manufacturing processes of opto-electronic products. In this paper, we studied reflection characteristics of polymeric waveguides with a 45°mirror, and coupling characteristics between the waveguide and the spotsize converted laser diode (SS-LD). We used polymeric optical waveguides for the substrate of O-SMT. The material of the core was deuterated poly-methylmethacrylate (d-PMMA). The core size and the refractive index difference of the waveguide were 40μm×40μm and 1.2%, respectively. A 45°total reflection mirror was fabricated by cutting the waveguide with a 90°V-shaped diamond blade. We studied reflection characteristics of polymeric optical waveguides with a 45°mirror and found that the optical ray which leaked through the 45°mirror existed. The insertion loss between the waveguide and the SS-LD mounted on the substrate (emitting wavelength of 1.3μm) was measured to be 1.8dB, and good agreement between the theory and the experiment was obtained.
