There have been a number of synthetic methods for the γ-yliden lactones or butenolides due to the biological activity exhibited by natural products.^<1)> In this paper, we wish to describe the method for preparation of 3-arylthio-2-buten-4-olide and the aldol reaction of 3-arylthio-2-buten-4-olide with aldehydes followed by dehydration reaction to afford the 4-aryliden or alkyliden 3-arylthio-2-buten-4-olide in the presence of LDA.
