The stereochemistry and diastereo ratio of the α- (1-hydroxybenzyl) -β-phenylthio-γ-butyrolactone obtained by the reaction of lithium thiophenoxide with 2-buten-4-olide in the presence of benzaldehyde were determined by ^1H-NMR. The stereochemistry and diastereo ratio of 2-(1-hydroxybenzyl)-3-phenylthio-4-pentanolide obtained by the reaction of lithium thiophenoxide with 2-penten-4-olide in the presence of benzaldehyde were also studied.
