Synthesis of Alumina Hydrate Gel from Alum by the Homogeneous Precipitation Method and Its structural Change by Heating

Studies have been made of the synthesis of alumina hydrate gel from alum and urea by the homogeneous precipitation method and of its structural change by heating, using the continuous pH measurement, differential thermal analysis and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. In two aqueous solutions of "sodium aluminum sulfate and urea "and" ammonium aluminum sulfate and urea", the variations in the pH of the solutions with heating time were almost the same and no difference was found. When alumina hydrate gels were heated, their structural transition to η-, θ-and α-alumina took place at 900,1100 and 1150℃, respectively; and the same transition temperatures were shown regardless of the kind of alums. This fact is thought to be due to the same properties of alumina hydrate gels synthesized from the alums and urea.
