Infrared multiple photon decomposition has been examined for β-propiolactone (C3H4O2) using a free electron laser (FEL) in the context of 13C enrichment. The compound has an intense infrared absorption band with a peak at 5.35 μm (1,870 cm−1) due to carbonyl stretching vibration. The laser wavelength was changed in the range from 5.40 to 5.60 μm (from 1,852 to 1,786 cm−1 in wavenumber). The observed products were only CO2 and C2H4. The atomic fraction of 13C in CO2 was found to be 14% in the excitation at λ=5.60μm (1,786 cm−1).
