This report presents the results of a questionnaire that was carried out as a pilot survey in February 2008 among the students at Mansfield College. Mansfield College is one of thirty-nine colleges that make up Oxford University, a thousand-year old institution located in Britain's oldest university city noted for its many buildings constructed in the Middle Ages. The purpose of the survey was to verify hypotheses involving the following points.(1)What evaluation do students make of the architectural environment of the campus where they study?(2)What influence does the built environment exert on students' identification with their colleges, their motivation to study, and their recognition of history?Since the number of completed questionnaires was very low, the results lack statistical meaning. Nonetheless, they do support the following hypotheses that also happen to agree with what I have heard on these matters in the past.(1)There were many students who gave consideration to the architectural environment when choosing a college to attend and continued to think that this factor was important even after they entered college.(2)Many students feel pleasure in learning in an historical environment, and think their recognition of history has been influenced by the environment in which they study.(3)Many students think that their college's architectural environment enhances their sense of identification with their college and reinforces their motivation to study.(4)In evaluating a building's environment, consideration is given to the “aesthetic pleasure" the building conveys.(5)A higher evaluation was given to historical environments than to modern buildings. Additionally, students strongly hope for the preservation of historical environments.(6)What they hope for in the building environment of the college most is “a function".The answers to the survey suggest that function and cost-priority alone do not make for a satisfactory learning environment. An aesthetic element is very important to produce that.
