Probably today no living Indian writer is better-known in the West than R. K. Narayan except Salman Rushdie. He has been writing in English throughout his long career as a fiction writer in spite of the fact that his mother-tongue is Tamil which is famous for its rich and old literary tradition. Every writer has a right to decide which language should be used for his creative writing, so Narayan cannot be criticized simply because he writes not in his mother-tongue but in a foreign language. But if a picture of India presented to the world by him is a distorted one, he is responsible for it. The aim of this essay is to examine Narayan's world by analyzing his some main novels.
