Kalidasa, the most celebrated poet throughout the long history of Indian literature, depicted the glorious history of the Raghu race in Raghuvamsa, In this somewhat long epic the first three kings, Dilipa, Raghu, and Aja and the last king, Agnivarna provide interesting examples of human images of the warrior class of ancient India, in spite of a kind of one-dimensionality of their characters. They are usually ideal kings, fathers and husbands and sometimes ideal lovers too. Thus the strict observance of the moral precepts of their time and class is common to all of them except for Agnivarna, who was a typical debauchee and died from consumption caused by excessive debauchery. The aim of this article is to show some examples of typical human images from some major works of classical Sanskrit literatue in order to examine whether the strong and peculiar obsession to the moral code, which is one of the most striking characters of modern Indian literature, is also found out in classical Sanskrit literature or not.
