From the studies of OKAMURA (1934), YAMADA (1959) and YAMAMOT0 (1957,1966), 375 species of marine benthic algae were known to occur along the coast of Kii Peninsula. Of these algae, 60 species belong to the Chlorophyceae, 79 to the Phaeophyceae and 236 to the Rhodophyceae. The author has made algal collectings at seven points in this region in April, 1978. The growing belts of intertidal benthic algae are observed in Kii Peninsula region as follows, from high tide to low tide water levels : Porphyra spp., Monostroma nitidum, Gloiopeltis furcata, Gloiopeltis tenax, Myelophycus simplex, Carpopeltis flabellata, Sargassum thunbergii, Hizikia fusiformis, Gigartina intermedia and Sargassum nipponicum. On the basis of the floristic similarities examined by the present author for the benthic species of the Chlorophyceae and the Phaeophyceae, the Pacific coast of Japan and the adjacent area may be divided into the following four phytogeographic regions : (1) from Shumushu Island to Tsugaru strait, (2) from Tsugaru strait to Choshi Peninsula, (3) from Boso Peninsula to Bungo strait and (4) Bungo strait to Yonakuni Island. Kii Peninsula belong to the region (3), which is situated in a warm temperate region.
