Sudden Disappearance of the First-Order Transition in $\beta$-Pyrochlore KOs2O6 under Low Pressure

We report the first observation of the pressure effect on the first-order transition at $T_{\text{p}} = 7.5$ K in the $\beta$-pyrochlore oxide superconductor KOs2O6 by specific-heat measurement. The peak in the specific heat at $T_{\text{p}}$ disappeared at a low pressure of 0.02 GPa. With increasing pressure up to 0.02 GPa, the coefficient of the $T^{5}$ dependence of the specific heat increases by 30%. This finding implies that low-energy excitations of phonons are enhanced by the suppression of the first-order transition. However, the specific-heat jump at $T_{\text{c}}$ is unchanged with pressure up to 1 GPa, indicating that the strong coupling superconductivity is rather robust under pressure.
