When an ultrasound wave propagates through cancellous bone in the direction parallel to the major trabecular orientation, two distinct waves, namely, "fast and slow waves", can be clearly observed. In a previous study, the effects of minor trabecular elements and pore spaces perpendicular to the major trabecular orientation on the propagation properties of the fast and slow waves were investigated using stratified cancellous bone phantoms, and it was suggested that both waves could be attenuated by the minor microstructures in the bone. For each wave propagation at oblique incidence to the cancellous bone phantom, in this study, the effect of minor trabecular elements was investigated. The experimental and simulated results showed that, for both the fast and slow waves, the minor trabecular effects depended on the propagation paths.
