Thermal Conductivity Characterization in Bulk Zn(Mn,Ga)O4 with Self-Assembled Nanocheckerboard Structures

The thermal conductivity of intragranular heterogeneous bulk Zn(Mn,Ga)O4, where two distinct types of rectangular nanorod with different compositions, ZnMn1.7Ga0.3O4 and ZnMn0.5Ga1.5O4, spontaneously interlace to form a cross-sectional checkerboard pattern, was investigated in the temperature range from 303 to 873 K. The thermal conductivity of this intragranular heterogeneous oxide is lower than that of the intergranular analogue and locates below the theoretical minimum limit of the mixture. We show for the first time that this self-assembled nanostructured Zn(Mn,Ga)O4 can effectively reduce thermal conductivity, providing a new insight into the field of thermoelectric oxides.
