The shape of the stepped horn joined cutting tip and vibration characteristics when varying the static pressing force applied to the vibrating surface of the cutting tip were examined to obtain high vibration amplitudes at the cutting tip using two types of stepped horn joined cutting tip. One type is a source in which only a longitudinal vibration is applied, and the other is one in which torsional and longitudinal vibrations are applied. Thus far, no detailed analysis of the vibration characteristics of these vibration sources has been carried out. Results indicate that the most appropriate cutting tip length is 25 mm for the stepped horn joined cutting tip that vibrates only longitudinally. However, for the longitudinally and torsionally vibrating stepped horn joined cutting tip, the most appropriate cutting tip length was found to be 15 mm. In this case, the longitudinal and torsional vibrations obtained sufficiently large amplitudes when the static pressing force applied to the cutting tip was varied.
