Iron carbide Fe7C3 nanoparticles were prepared by decomposing pentacarbonyl complex precursors in a closed autoclave reactor. Spherical nanoparticles were obtained without adding polyethylene (10) octylphenyl ether (OP-10) as a surfactant. The addition of OP-10 induced the one-dimensional crystal growth to form the Fe7C3 nanowires. The iron metal nanowires obtained by reducing the above-mentioned carbide showed anisotropic magnetic properties with a saturated magnetization value of ${\sim}180$ emu/g.
