Electrochemical Preparation of a $\pi$-Conjugated Polymer Having Imidazole Group and Its pH-Responsive Functionality

We synthesized a monomer 2,5-di(2,2$'$-bithiophene-5-yl)-1-methylimidazole (4TMI), and also poly(4TMI), random copolymers of poly(4TMI-co-bithiophene) (P4TMIB), poly[4TMI-co-(3-octylthiophene)] (P4TMIO) were synthesized by electropolymerization. Protonation to 4TMI by trifluoroaceticacid (TFA) resulted in that absorption spectrum of $\pi$–$\pi^{*}$ transition was shifted from 373 to 361 nm. However, absorption spectra of polymers did not shift. Doping–dedoping potentials of polymers in cyclic voltammetry were shifted positively by adding TFA and shifted negatively by amine. The degree of contribution in resonance structures of protonated imidazole units was different between monomer and polymer. P4TMIO exhibited gel characteristics in chloroform and the volume was decreased by adding TFA and the shrinking ration was 6.7.
