In this paper, we discuss an optical design for multilayered waveguide holographies that employ an orthogonal aperture multiplexing (OAM) technique. The OAM is a type of spatial multiplexing technology that can be applied to thin film holographies. The OAM can convert the very dense pit density of a hologram into the sparse pixel density of a charge coupled device (CCD) without any loss of information and increase focal depth, thus releasing us from the need to use the focusing servo of the CCD. There are two types of optical design, namely, direct imaging on a CCD and telecentric optics. The former is suitable for a thin driver and the latter allows a high wavelength tolerance and a large data capacity.
