Microstructures in Complex Perovskite (Li1/2Ln1/2)TiO3 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm)

Microstructural characterizations of (Li1/2Ln1/2)TiO3 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm) systems were carried out using transmission electron microscopy. Cuboidal grains of ${\sim}2.5$ μm mean size with internal fine structures are dominant. Antiphase boundaries (APBs) and ferroelastic domains are found among the internal fine structure. The APBs originate from the superlattice reflections of (1/2)(001) observed in three systems and (1/2)(111) NaCl-type ordering of Pr3+ or Nd3+ and Li1+ or vacancy in LPT and LNT. However, in LST, (1/2)(111) ordering is absent. The ferroelastic domains are formed by the antiphase and in-phase tilting of oxygen octahedra and the antiparallel shifts of A-site cations. Also, more complex structural changes such as spinodal decomposition are involved in the phase transitions in these systems.
