We have investigated the effect of a Ru underlayer on the magnetic properties and film structures of Fe70Co30 films. A 0.7-nm-thick Ru underlayer contributes to the decrease in coercivity to 2–3 Oe in Fe–Co films. A 200-nm-thick Fe–Co film with a Ru underlayer exhibits a good $\mu$–$f$ response, that is, the real part of permeability $\mu'$ remains constant up to 3 GHz. The reasons for achieving soft magnetic properties are presumably the fine and uniform grain structures, and the increasing crystal orientation of bcc(211) or the decreasing crystal orientation of bcc(110). By applying a Ru/Fe–Co layer to the pole tip materials of write heads, further improvement in write performance can be expected.
