Nondestructive testing (NDT) of metal planes with tilted or variable-depth subsurface defects have been demonstrated using a photoacoustic microscope (PAM). Two types of subsurface defects, the tilted and wedge-shaped vertical ones, were prepared and fabricated in the specimen by mechanical processing. The obtained signal intensity distribution was affected by the tilted and wedge-shaped subsurface defects, and showed an asymmetrical shape.
