Nondestructive Evaluation of Magnetic Disk Heads Using a Photoacoustic Microscope

Nondestructive evaluation of magnetic disk heads is achieved using a photoacoustic microscope (PAM). A qualitative evaluation for gap or an isolation area of the heads is performed with photoacoustic amplitude and phase images. Resolution achieved is about 2 micrometer. A crack in a ferrite region and a bubble in a glass filter is observed with the PAM.
