Optical Kerr constants of p-n-hexyl-p′-cyanobiphenyl (6CB) in isotropic phase were measured over a wide temperature range by an optical system in which a continuous wave laser was used as a pump light. No conspicuous deviation from the mean-field theory was observed up to 64°C. The temperature independent or slowly changing component of the Kerr constant reported by several researchers may be excited effectively only when the intense peak power of the pulse laser is utilized.
